Severna Park High School Junior, Colleen Saunders has recently been accepted into Interlochen’s High School Division Summer Arts Camp for piano. Interlochen Center for the Arts is located in northwest Michigan and is internationally recognized for working with some of the best musicians in the world.

Colleen will spend 6 weeks this summer studying piano performance with distinguished piano faculty from various universities across the US that include Peabody Conservatory, the Eastman School of Music, and the Universities of Michigan and Texas.

Colleen auditioned for her position at Interlochen earlier this year with two memorized pieces- Frederic Chopin’s “Revolutionary” Etude Op. 10 No. 12 and Edvard Grieg’s Lyric Piece “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen” Op. 65 No. 6.

Colleen has been studying piano with me for the past 7 years and plays a very active role in the community by sharing her music with others. She was instrumental in bringing a music program to the St. Margaret’s Church Vacation Bible School program held at St. Phillip’s in Annapolis last summer. She taught several groups of children during the week and performed on piano and organ accompanying the 70+ children enrolled in their finale production. She was chosen as the keyboardist for the past two Severna Park High School Musical Theater productions “In the Heights” in 2013 and “Grease” in 2014. She currently practices music therapy at the Hospice of Chesapeake Critical Care Unit by performing for patients and she regularly accompanies the 4th & 5th grade chorus at Belvedere Elementary.

Next month Colleen will be performing various Baroque-era pieces on harpsichord at St. Margaret’s Church in Annapolis at the “Baroque Teahouse” on Saturday April 11. She is currently working on material for her Senior Piano Recital in 2016. Colleen plans to major in Music Therapy in college.

January Student of the Month

Congrats Colleen!

Congrats Colleen!

Congratulations to Colleen, January Student of the Month. Colleen has been working amazingly hard all year!

Recently, she was the accompanist for the 4th and 5th grade Chorus at Belvedere Elementary and she has been working tirelessly on her audition material for Interlochen’s International 6-week Summer Piano Program. I am so proud of her and the work and effort she puts into all of her performances.

Colleen is now ready to begin her pieces for the Baroque Teahouse at Reynold’s Tavern, the June Awards Recital, and her final solo Senior Recital next year! WOW!

Colleen is a Junior at Severna Park High School and is working on her 7th year in piano lessons with me. When Colleen isn’t playing piano she likes to…..no, Colleen is always playing piano!! 🙂

Colleen will have her photo on the wall of fame for the rest of the year and she will also receive a $10 Music & Arts gift card to spend on fun music or anything else she wants.

OK colleen, ready to roll! (no pressure…..)

Colleen has been working on Chopin’s “Revolutionary” Etude and Grieg’s “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen” for quite some time. Both pieces were memorized and performed without edit for the audition process and Colleen really stood up to the challenge. Colleen is a Junior at Severna Park High School.

Congratulations to Zoey, December Student of the Month. Zoey began lessons with me 4 months ago and has been working amazingly hard.

Recently, she prepared “Arabian Dance” from Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite for our Christmas Recital on December 20th at St. Margaret’s Church.  She had to prepare herself to perform at her first recital with me under the pressure of a VERY large audience.

I am so proud of her and the work and effort she put into her performance. I can tell already that she is going to be a wonderful classical pianist.

Zoey is in 4th grade this year and is working on her 1st year in piano lessons with me. When Zoey isn’t playing piano, she enjoys art and attends Hebrew School.

Zoey will have her photo on the wall of fame for the rest of the year and she will also receive a $10 Music & Arts gift card to spend on fun music or anything else she wants.

October Student of the Month

IMG_8012Congratulations to Delaney, October Student of the Month. Delaney has been doing a superior job in lessons and has worked hard to receive a perfect lesson rating with 5+1 every week!

Delaney has some pretty difficult pieces, too. She memorized the “Potter Waltz” from the Harry Potter Movie and will be performing it at the Westfield Annapolis Mall “Melodies at the Movies event on November 15. She also learned the Toccata in D minor on the organ for our Halloween Party.

Currently, she is working on Debussy’s “The Snow is Dancing” from the Children’s Corner Suite and Tchaikovsky’s “Overture” from the Nutcracker Suite for our Christmas Recital in December. And that’s not all, she will also be accompanying the Chesapeake Bay Middle School chorus at their upcoming Winter Recital and the Anne Arundel County Festival Chorus Adjudications in the Spring.

She is a hard working professional pianist and really deserves this honor!

Delaney is in 7th grade this year and is working on her 5th year in piano lessons with me. When Delaney isn’t playing piano, she participates in Competitive Irish Step Dance, school chorus, and drama.

Delaney will have her photo on the wall of fame for the rest of the year and she will also receive a $10 Music & Arts gift card to spend on fun music or anything else she wants.

Awards Recital Program 2014

Awards Recital Prog 2014

Awards Recital Prog 2014-1

I just don’t know how to express just how PROUD I am of all of my students. They have all worked so hard this year, not only on their pieces, but on all of the requirements of their awards. Many of my students are now able to share their piano talents with others out and about in the community. Three are even playing out as professional accompanists for both Belvedere and Folger McKinsey Elementary School Chorus concerts.

Yesterday we had our end of the school year Awards Recital and it was fabulous. Everyone had a great time hearing all the pieces. Many of the parents commented to me about how nice it was to learn about the composer Claude Debussy and hear 3 of his pieces come to life at our own recital. Colleen gave us all an amazing finale with her performance of the Pathetique Sonata- what a great musical way to end the day.

I can’t wait to see what pieces next year’s recital program will hold!

*correction- Little Shepherd is # 5 of Debussy’s Children Corner Suite

April Student of the Month

Congratulations Claire!

Congratulations Claire!

Congratulations to Claire for being my April 2014 student of the month.

Claire began lessons with me in 2012 and is well into her classical piano studies. She also enjoys playing Baroque music on the studio harpsichord and will be performing in our Baroque Teahouse this summer. She is in 4th grade at Nantucket Elementary. She and I will be playing a fantastic rendition of Disney’s “Let it Go” at our studio’s annual Awards recital next month and she’ll finish her performance with a Scarlatti Sonata.

Claire is a piano teacher’s dream…she practices 45 minutes each morning and another 45 minutes AGAIN each afternoon. She has progressed in her studies at an incredible speed (with that kind of practice, its no wonder!) and will soon be next on my list of choral accompanists- possibly even the youngest ever for my studio.

Claire will have her photo on the wall of fame for the rest of the year and she will also receive a $10 Music & Arts gift card to spend on fun music or anything else she wants.

A Lesson Book Duet Surprise

Joseph began a new lesson book last week and surprised me by offering to play the teacher part in the first duet. I offered him 3 bonus beads if he worked on it during the week at home and actually play it this week. Yesterday, he came to his lesson and played the entire part beautifully with the pedal AND the metronome! Great job Joseph!! You can play the teacher parts anytime you like!

Joseph plays the “teacher part” of the first duet in his new book!

Congratulations Delaney!!

photoDelaney was the accompanist for her own 6th grade chorus class (Chesapeake Bay Middle School) at the Anne Arundel County Festival Chorus adjudication  yesterday. She played One Little Candle, Alleluia, and Ose Shalom, —beautifully. What an accomplishment!

Student of the Month- February 2014

Congratulations to Grace for being my February 2014 student of the month.

Grace just began lessons last June and has progressed VERY quickly!! She is in 5th grade at Belvedere Elementary and when she isn’t practicing for her next lesson, she is practicing with the Children’s Theater of Annapolis. We’ll be seeing her soon in their next production.

Grace has really worked hard to put in the extra effort it takes to get 2 weeks of 5+1 bonus beads…she even received 5+2 one week!! She has completed the puzzles in our Piano Explorer magazine, looked ahead, and practiced songs not in her assignment. She really impressed me with how well she did on her lesson on her material. Great Job, Grace!!

Grace will have her photo on the wall of fame for the rest of the year and she will also receive a $10 Music & Arts gift card to spend on fun music or anything else she wants.
