May Studio Happenings

This is how we sight read in my studio. (Hands together and NO peeking!) Great job, Sarah!! My students have to read between 150 and 200 lines of music to receive the studio Sight Reading Trophy.

Aaron did a great job transposing at his lesson. He picked all the best keys out of the key bag too: f# minor, a-flat minor, A major, C-flat Major, and B-flat Major. Show me a 3rd grader who can do that!! Way to go, Aaron!!

Quintin (shown on snare drum) not only finishes his 4th year of piano, but has also completed his career in the Belvedere Elementary School band on percussion. But thats not the end for him! He will be continuing piano and percussion into Middle School this fall! Way to go, Quintin!!!

Colleen has been accompanying at Belvedere Elementary for a few years now and the chorus director Mrs. Supko (far left) sure will miss her now that she’s graduated!

Oops, I forgot to change lenses on my camera, but Annabelle and Colleen are accompanying for the Severna Park Middle School chorus concert. Annabelle has been accompanying since 5th grade and she will continue as she enters high school in the fall.

Colleen is rehearsing for her Senior Recital scheduled for THIS Saturday June 4 at 1:00pm at St. Margaret’s Church Annapolis.

Severna Park Chorus Concert

I am so proud of my students who are accompanying for school choruses! Annabelle (7th grader at SPMS), Colleen (Senior at SPHS), and Delaney (8th grader at Chesapeake Bay Middle) are old pros now. Between them they’ve more than a dozen concerts! Last week Annabelle and Colleen played for a HUGE concert at Severna Park High School where both the high school chorus and the Middle School Elite Chorus had a performance of several opera arias and other operatic selections.

It was a great “night at the opera” and the girls played beautifully!

Severna Park High School Junior, Colleen Saunders has recently been accepted into Interlochen’s High School Division Summer Arts Camp for piano. Interlochen Center for the Arts is located in northwest Michigan and is internationally recognized for working with some of the best musicians in the world.

Colleen will spend 6 weeks this summer studying piano performance with distinguished piano faculty from various universities across the US that include Peabody Conservatory, the Eastman School of Music, and the Universities of Michigan and Texas.

Colleen auditioned for her position at Interlochen earlier this year with two memorized pieces- Frederic Chopin’s “Revolutionary” Etude Op. 10 No. 12 and Edvard Grieg’s Lyric Piece “Wedding Day at Troldhaugen” Op. 65 No. 6.

Colleen has been studying piano with me for the past 7 years and plays a very active role in the community by sharing her music with others. She was instrumental in bringing a music program to the St. Margaret’s Church Vacation Bible School program held at St. Phillip’s in Annapolis last summer. She taught several groups of children during the week and performed on piano and organ accompanying the 70+ children enrolled in their finale production. She was chosen as the keyboardist for the past two Severna Park High School Musical Theater productions “In the Heights” in 2013 and “Grease” in 2014. She currently practices music therapy at the Hospice of Chesapeake Critical Care Unit by performing for patients and she regularly accompanies the 4th & 5th grade chorus at Belvedere Elementary.

Next month Colleen will be performing various Baroque-era pieces on harpsichord at St. Margaret’s Church in Annapolis at the “Baroque Teahouse” on Saturday April 11. She is currently working on material for her Senior Piano Recital in 2016. Colleen plans to major in Music Therapy in college.

January Student of the Month

Congrats Colleen!

Congrats Colleen!

Congratulations to Colleen, January Student of the Month. Colleen has been working amazingly hard all year!

Recently, she was the accompanist for the 4th and 5th grade Chorus at Belvedere Elementary and she has been working tirelessly on her audition material for Interlochen’s International 6-week Summer Piano Program. I am so proud of her and the work and effort she puts into all of her performances.

Colleen is now ready to begin her pieces for the Baroque Teahouse at Reynold’s Tavern, the June Awards Recital, and her final solo Senior Recital next year! WOW!

Colleen is a Junior at Severna Park High School and is working on her 7th year in piano lessons with me. When Colleen isn’t playing piano she likes to…..no, Colleen is always playing piano!! 🙂

Colleen will have her photo on the wall of fame for the rest of the year and she will also receive a $10 Music & Arts gift card to spend on fun music or anything else she wants.

Belvedere Elementary Winter Concert

I got to see Quintin play percussion in his school band concert on Thursday!

Colleen was the accompanist for Belvedere’s 4th & 5th grade chorus at their Winter Concert on Thursday.

Belvedere has a HUGE concert!

Colleen has been hard at work on her Christmas recital pieces, Belvedere Elementary’s Winter Chorus Concert, and her Interlochen audition pieces. But what’s really kept her busy at the piano recently is “Grease”.  For the past 2 weeks, Colleen has been the keyboardist in the pit orchestra for the Severna Park High School’s performance of the musical. Colleen did a fantastic job and I’m super proud of her!

Great job, Colleen!

I just don’t know how to express just how PROUD I am of all of my students. They have all worked so hard this year, not only on their pieces, but on all of the requirements of their awards. Many of my students are now able to share their piano talents with others out and about in the community. Three are even playing out as professional accompanists for both Belvedere and Folger McKinsey Elementary School Chorus concerts.

Yesterday we had our end of the school year Awards Recital and it was fabulous. Everyone had a great time hearing all the pieces. Many of the parents commented to me about how nice it was to learn about the composer Claude Debussy and hear 3 of his pieces come to life at our own recital. Colleen gave us all an amazing finale with her performance of the Pathetique Sonata- what a great musical way to end the day.

I can’t wait to see what pieces next year’s recital program will hold!

*correction- Little Shepherd is # 5 of Debussy’s Children Corner Suite

Congratulations Annabelle!

This week Annabelle played her first professional gig for the Belvedere Elementary School Spring Chorus Concert. She has been working on the pieces all semester and performed beautifully for the concerts! Annabelle had studied piano with me for 5 years and is a 6th grader at Severna Park Middle She is so far, the youngest student I’ve ever had professionally accompany a chorus!

She played:

  • Gloria Allelua
  • All Through the Night
  • Duct Tape
  • Rattlin’ Bog

Great Job Annabelle! Congratulations!

Congratulations Delaney!!

photoDelaney was the accompanist for her own 6th grade chorus class (Chesapeake Bay Middle School) at the Anne Arundel County Festival Chorus adjudication  yesterday. She played One Little Candle, Alleluia, and Ose Shalom, —beautifully. What an accomplishment!

Congratulations Delaney!

Delaney accompanied the Chesapeake Middle School Chorus in “One Little Candle” at the Holiday Concert on Wed Dec 18. She played beautifully. Delaney is the youngest student I’ve ever had accompany a chorus (she is in 6th grade this year). Delaney has been asked to accompany the chorus again at Festival in March!
